The Polystyrene is one of the oldest thermoplastic polymers, dating back to 1930, when the pioneers BASF in Europe and DOW in the United States began its development.
Polystyrene grades can be divided into two main groups:
- GPPS – crystal polystyrene;
- HIPS – high impact polystyrene.
The GPPS or crystal polystyrene is totally transparent but fragile and is widely used for food packaging applications or for the production of display stands.
The HIPS or high impact polystyrene, Polystyrene is easy to work with, has a brilliance that makes it aesthetically pleasing and is still the material choice for thermoforming. The best-known application of polystyrene is that of yoghurt pots, CD cases, and disposable cutlery.
Another important application in the field of polystyrene thermoforming is that concerning the internal parts of fridges and freezers, for which special grades with high resistance to stress cracking have been designed.
